Dr. Fathi El Sayyad is a consultant cataract and glaucoma surgeon and founder and chairman of Sayyad Eye Center, established in late 2001. He trained in ophthalmology at Ninewells Hospital & Medical School, Dundee, Scotland (1979–1983), and completed a glaucoma fellowship at New York Hospital–Cornell Medical Center, USA (1985–1986). He served as an FRCS examiner in ophthalmology in Edinburgh and Glasgow for over 20 years. His career combines patient care, surgical research and the training of ophthalmologists.
Dr. Fathi El Sayyad is a consultant cataract and glaucoma surgeon and founder and chairman of Sayyad Eye Center. He established the center in Mohandessin in late 2001.
He undertook postgraduate ophthalmology training at Ninewells Hospital & Medical School, Dundee, Scotland, United Kingdom, 1979–1983.
He then completed a glaucoma fellowship at New York Hospital–Cornell Medical Center, New York, USA, 1985–1986. His subsequent career included senior clinical and Medical Director roles at Magrabi Eye Hospitals & Centers in Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
He served as an FRCS examiner in ophthalmology for the Royal Colleges in Edinburgh and Glasgow for over 20 years. In 2000, he was awarded the honorary title of Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Louisiana State University, USA.
For more than 15 years, he led fellowship and residency training at Magrabi. He continues to share his experience with younger ophthalmologists, with an emphasis on thoughtful clinical decision-making and glaucoma surgery.
His clinical interests include glaucoma assessment and long-term management, selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage implant surgery. His work also encompasses cataract surgery and combined cataract and glaucoma procedures.
Dr. El Sayyad chaired the PACO and MEACO scientific program committee for over 15 years. His contribution to the advancement of glaucoma surgery and surgical training across the Middle East spans clinical practice, research and the education of generations of ophthalmologists.
His research has addressed complex glaucoma, drainage implants, filtration surgery, combined cataract and glaucoma procedures, and laser trabeculoplasty. He also co-edited The Refractory Glaucomas (1995).
In 2000, he was awarded the honorary title of Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Louisiana State University, USA.
He received the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Achievement Award in 2000.
He received the Labib Award from MEACO in 2005.
