Keratoconus Treatment

Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease where the normally round cornea thins and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape, causing severe distortion and blurry vision. Left untreated, it can lead to blindness or necessitate a transplant. We specialize in early intervention and custom biomechanical strengthening.

Symptoms & Reasons to Visit

Rapid, progressive worsening of vision in one or both eyes
Frequent changes in glasses or contacts prescription within short periods
Ghosting or multiple shadow images around text
Severe distortion of straight lines, making them look bent or wavy

How We Diagnose

We track keratoconus progression with high-definition corneal elevation mapping (Pentacam) to capture micro-thinning, and anterior segment OCT to monitor epithelial layer changes.

Treatment Options

  • Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL): The gold standard treatment using Riboflavin and UV light to stop disease progression
  • Intracorneal Ring Segments (Kerarings/Intacs): Micro-inserts to flatten the cone and improve visual quality
  • Customized Topography-Guided PRK (Athens Protocol): Combined with CXL to simultaneously strengthen and improve vision
  • Scleral Contact Lenses: Specialty medical lenses that vault over the cone for outstanding crisp vision

What to Expect During Your Visit

If you undergo Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL), the procedure is done comfortably in our outpatient clinic. Numbing drops are used, and Riboflavin drops are applied over 30 minutes. You may feel mild discomfort for 48 hours post-op while the surface layer heals, which is managed with contact lenses and pain-relief drops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can cross-linking cure keratoconus?

Cross-linking does not cure keratoconus or restore perfect vision; rather, it permanently strengthens the corneal fibers to freeze the disease progression and prevent the future need for a corneal transplant.

Is rubbing my eyes dangerous for keratoconus?

Yes, vigorous eye rubbing is a primary risk factor for the onset and rapid progression of keratoconus. Patients are strictly advised to avoid eye rubbing and receive allergy drops if needed.
